This week’s Eat Local Challenge features tomatoes. I think it’s one of the best vegetables (technically fruit) to illustrate how delicious it is to eat locally-grown produce. There is absolutely no comparison between the hard, tasteless red golf balls from the store and the juicy, flavorful, brilliantly colored heirlooms that you can grow yourself or find at the farmer’s market.
This weekend is the Heirloom Tomato Festival at Frederick Meijer gardens. Coincidence? I think not. So grab a BLT and check out the following resources for putting up tomatoes, courtesy of West Michigan bloggers.
- Adrienne over at Whole New Mom shares The Easiest Way to Preserve Tomatoes.
- Andrea from Simple Organized Living shares How to Can Tomatoes.
- Katie at Kitchen Stewardship shares The Best Sound Ever Heard in the Kitchen
- Over at The Local Cook, I show you how to can Bruschetta Preserve, Basic Tomato Sauce, Pizza Sauce, and Salsa
