Now is the time to stock up on seasonal produce!
As evidenced by the bulging bags from my last CSA pickup, summer bounty has arrived in West Michigan. Now is the time to take that canning class or pull out the food saver. You will be glad you did when there is snow on the ground!
The first step is to decide whether you want to freeze or can your produce, and whether you want to take the time to process things now or just freeze the produce to make into jam, chutney, salsa, and the like later in the winter when you have more time.
Here are some of my favorite websites for ideas:
The Canning Diva: Recipes and classes right here in West Michigan!
Fresh Preserving: Home of the famous Ball Blue book, plus lots of recipes and how-to videos
Pick Your Own: Extensive instructions for freezing, canning, and a list of you pick farms by area.
Once you’ve decided what you’d like to put up, it’s time to take stock. Perhaps you have your own garden and plan to save the extras. Other options are to ask for other people’s extras (zucchini, anyone?) or stock up at your local farmer’s market.
Another convenient option is to order directly from our sponsor, Groundswell Community Farm CSA. Order extras for freezing and canning. You can reach the farm by contacting them via email: email@example.com or calling them directly: 616-885-7776 *(Farmer Katie)
Interested in buying a winter share to continue receiving Michigan Bounty thru the end of the year?
Winter CSA shares from Groundswell Community Farm are still available – 7 weeks @ $20/week
Winter CSA shares bring fresh flavors to your table through November and December. The shares are less diverse than the summer CSA, with salad mixes, lettuce, radishes, cilantro, kale, carrots, parsnips, Brussels’ sprouts, parsley, potatoes, garlic, onions and winter squash. These shares include hardy field crops like carrots dug from under the snow, salad greens from our unheated hoop house and storage crops from our walk-in cooler. Cost is $140 for 7 weeks. Pickup locations and times may differ from our summer shares. Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to be added to an email list for sales of extra winter greens.
