Last week I had the privilege of touring Hudsonville Ice Cream. I know, I am special–they are not normally open to the public! I grew up eating Hudsonville ice cream so I was super excited.
Hudsonville ice cream isn’t in Hudsonville, actually. It started in Burnips and is now in Holland. They still source all of their milk locally, though! Upon entering their facility, I was impressed at how homey it was – a fireplace welcomed us.
The next thing that struck me was how clean everything was! The floors were spotless, as were the empty three gallon buckets that you might find at your local ice cream scoop shop.
All of the ice cream base is mixed in one room, pasteurized, and sent to the mixing room. After everything is mixed up it goes for final testing and when everything is all clear it is shipped out. They take safety very seriously.
Of course, by the end of the tour, I was SO ready to try some ice cream. They did not disappoint. I was able to try the new natural vanilla, the seaside caramel, and a new chocolate/vanilla twist. My favorite was the seaside caramel (I actually went out and bought some this weekend!)
Another thing I love about Hudsonville Ice Cream is their partnership with other Michigan businesses like the Tigers, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the Grand Hotel. It’s a fun way to celebrate our state. And with summer almost here (hopefully), I anticipate a lot of celebrating.
