SUMMARY:Green Drinks
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Wege Foundation Speaker Series Join us on Thursday\, April 19 for Green Drinks at The Meanwhile Bar. This month's Green Drinks is presented by the 16th Annual Wege Foundation Speaker Series\, which will be held immediately before Green Drinks\, 4 to 5 p.m. at the nearby Aquinas College Performing Arts Center. This year's speaker is Dr. Daniel H. Janzen\, who has devoted his life to preserving and protecting biodiversity in the tropical forests of Costa Rica. This project is now the oldest\, largest\, and most successful ecosystem restoration project on the planet. Janzen’s work has been recognized with a MacArthur Fellowship\, the Crafoord Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences\, and\, the Kyoto Prize\, considered the Nobel Prize of Japan. Janzen will talk about his work to restore the forest ecosystems in a large conserved wildland in northwestern Costa Rica\, conservation through biodiversity development\, and why what happens in Costa Rica matters to the rest of the world. The heart of Dr. Janzen’s success story is the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) equaling two percent of the entire country and stretching six kilometers into the Pacific. The University of Pennsylvania biologist’s passion for conservation is driven by the fact that the ACG contains 350\,000 species of plants and animals or 2.6 percent of the world’s biodiversity – as much as the U.S. and Canada combined. In addition to Janzen\, this year’s Wege Lecture will include additional experts on tropical restoration\, including Dr. Janzen’s wife and fellow scientist Dr. Winnie Hallwachs and William Allen\, who authored the book “Green Phoenix\,” which documents how Janzen and Hallwachs brought Costa Rica’s burned-out pastures back to life through reforestation. Allen and Janzen will be available to sign copies of his book after the lecture.

After managing the Fulton Street Farmers Market between 2005 and 2007\, Jayson Otto researched its surprising beginnings. City ordinances had for twenty years prior to 1917 declared it illegal for farmers to sell on city streets. When inflation caused food prices to soar some local residents\, mostly women\, believed farmers markets and community gardens could help feed struggling families in Grand Rapids. Otto’s story will reveal how they worked during the first quarter of the twentieth century to fight the “High Cost of Living” by bringing fresh food production closer to home. An “accidental” women’s historian\, Otto did not realize until he started his thesis in historical agriculture for Michigan State University that women in Grand Rapids were instrumental in the battle to get healthy food into the city. Eva McCall Hamilton\, later elected to the Michigan senate in 1920\, led the Grand Rapids Federation of Women’s Clubs\, Ladies Literary Club\, and the Woman’s Committee of the Council of National Defense . Farmers markets were started in Grand Rapids through civic engagement. Ninety years later\, the Fulton Street Farmers Market stands as a testament to the work not only of Progressive Era women\, but of everyone supporting the market through its ups and downs.

SUMMARY:WMEAC Film Series - DIRT! The Movie
DESCRIPTION:DIRT! The Movie will be showing at the Wealthy Theater as part of the WMEAC Film Series When was the last time you took a moment to think about dirt? I know\, it’s been a while for those of us at WMEAC\, too. That’s why the third installment of the film series features DIRT! As one of Earth’s most under-appreciated resources\, dirt does an awful lot – it cleans our water\, helps feed us\, and regulates the climate. This film examines humans’ relationship with dirt; how many people abuse and destroy it\, but also how we can repair the damage done and leave future generations with a cleaner\, healthier world. Urban farming\, urban planning\, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)\, farming policy\, and globalization… DIRT! touches on all of these important topics (and more). Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKPcuwOOGqY&feature=player_embedded WMEAC will screen DIRT! at Wealthy Theatre’s Microcinema on Wednesday\, March 7. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5. Doors are at 6:30pm\, movie starts at 7pm. We hope to bring a local farmer (or two) into the conversation and discuss what all of us can do in Grand Rapids as dirt stewards. http://wmeacfilmseries.com/dirt/

SUMMARY:Michigan Hops Growers and Microbrewers Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Attention Michigan Hops Growers and Microbrewers! Growth of Michigan's hops growing industry and local microbrewers is on the rise. It is time to define the collective needs of the microbrewing industry in Michigan! We are calling on hops growers and microbrewers from around the state to define industry needs and communicate quality expectations at a statewide Hops Growers and Microbrewers Symposium on March 3\, 2012. The forum's purpose is to create dialogue amongst hops growers and microbrewers from around the state. As new microbrewers enter the industry and existing brewers expand\, it is clear that industry needs to be identified and addressed from a statewide level. Prompted by the recent announcement of a hops processing facility development in Barry County by Hop Head Farms\, the West MI Regional Economic Development Collaborative responded to create this symposium bringing industry needs to the forefront setting the pace in West MI. The MI Grape and Wine Council has successfully gained recognition of Michigan wines through a collaborative industry effort; proof that focused collaboration breeds success. This symposium will begin the statewide collaboration of hops growers and microbrewers to define the future of Michigan's microbrewing industry. Presentations by: MI Restaurant Association - Industry Research Results MI Brewers Guild - Industry Update by Scott Graham Microbrewers Panel Hops Growers Panel Action Plans and Next Steps The event is open to hops growers and microbrewers and select partners by invitation. Please join in this conversation to help shape the microbrewing industry in Michigan. Register online or contact Valerie Byrnes at valerie@mibarry.com. This program is sponsored by The Right Place\, Inc. and the Barry County Economic Development Alliance in partnership with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the MSU-Product Center.

SUMMARY:Wake Up Weekend
DESCRIPTION:An Annual Celebration of Compassionate Living in Grand Rapids\, MI Wake Up Weekend is an annual grass-roots celebration of animal-friendly advocacy\, art\, food\, education\, music\, philosophy\, and religion in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Our mission is to demonstrate that compassionate living toward animals is an accessible\, inspiring\, inclusive\, and holistic way for engaged human beings from all walks of life to live more intentionally for the good of all creatures–human beings\, animals\, and the environment. Through free and open public lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and community events that bring the creativity and vision of activists\, artists\, chefs\, philosophers\, and theologians into unexpected and often bracing juxtaposition\, Wake Up Weekend seeks to solicit the many but often hidden ways in which the exploitation of animals–an urgent moral issue in its own right–sustains other entrenched forms of oppression that we all stand against: global hunger\, diseases of affluence\, the exploitation of women\, racial injustice\, and environmental degradation. But if our culture’s exploitation of animals has negative repercussions for virtually every square inch of the order of things\, then the wake up call to more compassionate living toward animals is also an invitation to the work of making all things new. We hope you’ll join us in this work\, and to increase the likelihood that you will\, we strive to minimize barriers to entry. Our events are free\, open to the public\, and achieved through collaboration among a variety of individuals\, institutions\, organizations\, and businesses based in the great state of Michigan. Sponsors\, collaborators\, and venues change from year to year\, and we’re always looking for new partnerships. Please contact us at wakeupweekend@gmail.com for further information on how to get involved.

SUMMARY:13th Annual Chili Cookoff
DESCRIPTION:Annual Chili Cook-off and Wine Lover's Potluck The categories will be the same as they were last year: Four Legs (beef and pork) Two Legs (Fowl) Vegetarian (non-meat) Exotic (Seafood or wild game\, including venison). Our judges\, who will again be coming from the Secchia Center for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College\, are getting excited about trying YOUR entry. Registration for the chili contestants will begin on December 1. ALL competing chilies must be pre-registered. On the day of the event\, we require all competing chilies to be at the winery between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Judging starts at 2:00 sharp and will be concluded by 3:00 PM. Our “winelover’s potluck” begins at 2:00 PM. Non-participants must bring an appetizer to share or a chili. In fact\, in an effort to provide enough chili for all visitors\, anyone who brings a chili (whether it is to be judged or not) will receive free admission for up to two people per 4-quart pot of chili. The entry fee for all others will be $2.00 pp. plus a dish to pass. Longtime musical friends of Fenn Valley\, The Trace\, will be entertaining all of us during the afternoon. They play classic "popular" music and you may have heard their music at previous winery events\, such as Wine Fest or our Summer Evening Cook-Outs. In addition to music\, chili\, and a potluck\, we will be pouring wine by the glass. We will be featuring some of the new wines from the past vintage and encourage all of you to enjoy a glass of wine with your chili. The schedule of activities for the day follows: 1:00-2:00- Registration of chilies 3:00- Winner announced 2:00-4:30- Wine Lover’s Potluck 2:00-4:30- The Trace plays For more information visit the Fenn Valley website.

SUMMARY:The Food and Wine of Beaujolais
DESCRIPTION:Beaujolais has gotten a bad rap in the American palate\, simply because a lot of them--especially of the "nouveau" variety--tend to be overpriced\, overhyped kool-aid. But\, to write off the Gamay-based wines of Beaujolais as "plonk for the unknowing" causes one to miss a fascinating and beautiful family of wines! Alongside the dinner\, we'll be tasting a full profile of the different appellations of Beaujolais\, from Fleurie to Morgon\, and see how well they work with the flavors of that region of France! The dinner's cost is $50.00 per person\, and we are limited to ONLY 12 GUESTS! To pay for your reservation\, visit the "Pay the Starving Artist" tab on the main FB page. Please call or email with questions\, but do note: as the seating is so limited\, ONLY pre-paid reservations will be secure. THE MENU: TBA
