Last year 116 people attended the program about mead. Mead is one of the oldest beverages consumed by man. The Vikings first brought mead to North America when they arrived on the coast of Maine around 1100 years ago. Mead is still very popular today\, and you can enjoy making mead at home using the techniques you will learn at this program. At this program you will: Learn a little about the history of mead Find out how honey turns into mead Learn what is needed to make mead at home if you have an interest Taste several flavors of mead from Bardic Wells Meadery Take home a bottle or two of mead for the holidays if you like Speakers: Wade Lawrence is a scientist\, a beekeeper\, and an expert home-made mead maker. Wade will explain the science of making mead at home and tell you what supplies you will need if you want to make mead at your house. Wade can answer your questions if you already make mead and want to improve it. Steve Haystead is a long-time beekeeper and is the founder of Bardic Wells Meadery in Montague\, Michigan. Bardic Wells is Michigan’s first licensed meadery. Right now Bardic Wells is in the process of expanding into a new 8\,000 square foot facility that also includes a micro-brewery. Steve is an entertaining and engaging speaker who will share his interesting story about progressing from beekeeper to mead maker. There is no charge to attend this program\, but you might want to bring a little extra cash to put in the basket as a donation to help cover expenses. This program on mead is one of the most costly programs provided by the Kalamazoo Bee Club all year. If you enjoy the program\, you are encouraged to contribute toward the cost. Thank you! A few volunteers will be needed to set up chairs and tables before the program and put away chairs and tables afterward. If you would like to help\, please arrive about 6:15 pm. Questions?
