When John & Mary Windemuller’s daughters chose to raise 3 goats as a 4H project in 1997, they never dreamed it would come to this. Country Winds Goat Shares now has several members, and they are planning to open a creamery in 2012.

This October, as the leaves transform their color and the sights and smells of fall settle in on southwest Michigan, local and distant travelers alike are invited to experience the first Arts and Eats Tour in southwest Michigan. The tour takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16, 2011.

When Wendy asked me to write about a kid-oriented place along Kent Harvest Trails for Eat Local! West Michigan, I immediately thought of Koetsier’s Greenhouse. They are one of the only places along the Kent Harvest Trails that is mostly indoors and geared toward the younger set (ages 10 and under.) This is the place to go on Fridays or Saturdays through the end of October, Rain or Shine!

When Jane Wiedenbeck, Grand Rapids field organizer for Food and Water Watch, contacted me about putting next week’s kickoff meeting for the Fair Farm Bill Campaign on the Eat Local, West Michigan! calendar, I knew I had to know more. Farm policy is near and dear to my heart as I watched my Dad “fight the man” as a potato and onion farmer when I was growing up.

A variety of events, some quite tasty, will be happening this fall to raise money for Fulton Street Farmer’s Market. The following press release provides more deatils. Hope to see you at one of them!

Because of the growing conditions, many local blueberry farms no longer have bleuberries available this season. If you are lucky enough to find them, perhaps at a farmer’s market, be sure to freeze them for winter use.

When the auto industry shake-up occurred in Michigan a few years ago, I felt that I needed to do something to draw positive attention to the state. I was tired of hearing so much negativity in the news, especially since I knew that there was much more to Michigan than just autos. “What about FRUIT?” I kept asking the radio, but it did not hear me.

Whether you’re looking for a bargain or just something fun to do with the kids, you pick farms are a summertime tradition. Where does one start to look?
